I'm trying some marketing for my ScreenAudit product next week. This will be my first attempt at marketing this product, although I did release it with a press release from the excellent PrMac.

ScreenAudit 1.5 - Screen and Webcam Capture - Full Stealth !

This update comes with SASHelper, (Screen Audit Stealth Helper) which is effectively a version of ScreenAudit that runs invisibly. No Dock Icon, No Menu, Nothing in the 'Force Quit' list, no evidence that it has launched and is running.

For this to work you must set the 'Hide Window' preferences within ScreenAudit, these preferences are also used by SASHelper. If running ScreenAudit and the preferences are set to Hide Window' you can use the Tools menu to show the window and from there you have access to the ScreenAudit preferences and the standard ScreenAudit tools.

ScreenAudit 1.3 Released

This version introduces a Tools Menu. From this menu you can choose to create a QuickTime Movie / Slideshow of all your archived images in chronological order.

Once the movie is created, it along with the images that make up the movie are moved into a new folder called Archive_Date_Time within your ScreenAudit destination folder. The movie can be used to easily view the captured activity.

ScreenAudit 1.1.5 Released

This is a small update:

The format of the preferences file has changed and you may need to re-enter your preferences information.

Licensing is now handled using the same binary along with a User Name and Password. This simplifies updating to a later version for licensed users.

The Countdown and Window Transitions are now halted when the About or Preferences windows are displayed.

Using ScreenAudit for some Time Lapse Photography with my iSight

I went away for the weekend and thought it would be interesting to point my iSight webcam out over the garden and tell ScreenAudit to take a photograph every 30 minutes. I also hoped to capture on camera the big cat beast (ok, it's a fox) that sneaks into my garden every night and uses it as a toilet ...

Forgetting that night means the absence of light I didn't get any pictures of the fox, but i did get nearly 4 days worth of time lapse photographs which was fun :-)

I found these interesting. The photos below show the arrival of dawn at around 06:50 and the way the sun illuminated the garden through to around 11:20.

ScreenAudit 1.1.4 Released

I've released an update to ScreenAudit. 1.1.4 gives the user the option of configuring ScreenAudit to capture the Camera, the Screen(s), Both or Neither (!!). Previous to 1.1.4 the assumption was made that screen capture would be the predominant use for ScreenAudit.

Feedback from customers has indicated that they would like the ability to perform *only* webcam capture for some kind of 'time lapse' / security recording purpose. This is a small update and was released a few minutes ago. It can be downloaded from the following location:

ScreenAudit for Mac OSX

ScreenAudit is a Mac OSX application that performs snapshots of your screen at timed intervals.  If you have multiple monitors it will take snapshots of them all.  The interval between snapshots, in seconds, the name of the destination folder (created within the ScreenAudit folder), and the quality of the resulting jpg can be set from within the Preferences menu.

ScreenAudit is not designed for covert ‘spying’ on a computer.  ScreenAudit has it’s own window which shows a countdown until the next timed snapshot.  The window flips from right to left as the snapshot is taken and the ScreenAudit icon in the dock displays the ‘Note’ graphic to let you know a snapshot has been taken.  If you do not wish to view the ScreenAudit window it can of course be minimised.

ScreenAudit is useful for a number of purposes.  Primarily it allows you to keep a record of your activities as you use your computer.  If you bill for time then ScreenAudit can be used to remind you what you were doing and when.

If you forget to save a document then ScreenAudit might come to your rescue by at least showing you the screen with the text displayed.  You will have to type it again but at least you won’t have to do it from memory.

If you are concerned that someone is using your computer in your absence then ScreenAudit will help you to see what was done.  Yes they could quit ScreenAudit or even delete the snapshot files but then at least you would be aware that someone has perhaps been doing something they shouldn’t !
If you manage a department you may wish to install ScreenAudit on your colleagues computers to keep a record of work done ?

By default ScreenAudit takes a snapshot every 5 minutes.  Bear in mind the disk space used if you set this interval to several seconds ! Although the files generated by ScreenAudit are not large, it is nonetheless advisable to backup and archive your images folder daily or at least weekly.  Obviously the larger your monitor and the more monitors you have attached, the more disk space is going to be used.
